Make It Better Monday: Your SEO

March 21, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2015-10-12So, why is their search engine rank different on a mobile device?

Exactly eleven months ago, Google rolled out an update to searches on mobile devices. Search rankings on mobile devices are now affected by the mobile-friendliness of the individual pages on your website. Your placement in Google’s search results will be significantly different on mobile devices than on a desktop computer if your website is not mobile-friendly. [Read more…]

Make It Better Monday: Your Video Content

March 14, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2015-10-19So, this is just a slide show?

Videos are a great way to engage your audience. One way to ensure that your video is engaging is to make sure that it is truly a video and not a slideshow masquerading in a video file format. Skip the slideshow of images found elsewhere on the web and provide genuine moving picture content.

Your video title and description were enticing enough to attract viewers, so give your audience video content that provides new information or presents that information in a new way. Unless your organization would like to highlight photography services, save your still images for elsewhere. [Read more…]

Make It Better Monday: Your Staff Portraits

March 7, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2015-11-30So, what do they look like now?

Your professional portrait should be a reflection of who you are today. If your out-of-date photo is particularly flattering, you may be tempted to continue using it. The reasons to keep your portrait up-to-date, however, are compelling.

An authentic photo of yourself provides an emotional connection and builds your personal “brand”. Using an older, outdated photo that no longer looks like you causes you to miss the opportunity of building recognition for your personal brand and may even negatively impact your trustworthiness due to the older photo being perceived as an inaccurate representation of yourself. Make It Better Monday: Your Website

January 4, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2015-10-12So, how old is this info?

You may have just re-launched your website with all new content yesterday, but how do we know that what we are looking at is brand new?

If you have a copyright date on your website that is updated manually, you may find yourself having to update the copyright date on each and every page of your site.

Websites with a content management system (CMS) may automatically update the date on the copyright at the footer of the page. However, since updating the copyright on your website can be done automatically, visitors still have no indication that the content they are viewing is brand new.

What are ways that you can show that your content is up to date?

  • Regularly update your blog with dated entries.
  • Include the date on any news items.
  • Add dated press releases and clippings.

So, what are ways that your web visitors can find out when your content was last updated? How often do you update your website or blog?

Make It Better Monday: Your Social Media Presence

December 28, 2015 by Engine Communication

https://www.complexbuilders.com MakeItBetterMonday_2015-10-26So, when will they be back?

To get the most out of your social media presence requires consistency in the frequency of your communication. Why not make it your 2016 New Year’s Resolution to dedicate time in your schedule to maintaining your social media presence? Pages with regular updates are able to build momentum that can’t be achieved through sporadic batches of social activity.

Are you being loyal to your audience? If you are consistent in your delivery of compelling social media content, you are giving your audience a reason to check back again for new content.

Make It Better Monday: Your Images

November 30, 2015 by Engine Communication

So, how much did they pay for these stock photos?

Be aware that popular photos on websites selling stock images might be popular enough to give away their source. Other tip-offs include architecture not common to your area, signage, or even the type of clothing worn by the model. If you look closely, you might even notice that often particular poses are favored by stock photographers.

So, aren’t they on the social networks?

Make sure your website has links to all of your social media pages. Prominently featuring icons to the social networks invites your stakeholders to be a part of the dialogue.

For websites that rely on frequent scrolling, Engine Communication advises clients to include social media icons on a fixed header, which can always be seen at the top of the page.

Make It Better Monday: Your Employer Brand

November 9, 2015 by Engine Communication

So, why would I want to work there?

Your website and social media are two very powerful channels for employer branding. Authenticity is the key: your message must match reality. And who is the most trusted source regarding your brand as an employer? That’s right – your employees.

Here are some of the messages that employees and job candidates are looking to hear:

  • “We value your thoughts, your feelings, your effort, your hard work and your time.”
  • “We recognize and reward our employees for the work that they do.”
  • “Our employees enjoy their work environment and working with their colleagues.”
  • “We help our employees learn, grow, and flourish.”
  • “Be inspired by our employees’ academic and professional achievements.”

MakeItBetterMonday_2015-10-12So, where are you located?

One way to make your web presence functional, and therefore valuable, is to include your geographic location. If, for whatever reason, you want to avoid listing a street address, include at least general info about your location, such as your city or area of town. Even if your organization is an exclusively online presence, the people behind your website and social media pages have a geographic location.
