Make It Better Monday: Your Website

April 25, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2015-10-12So, who owns your website?

If you have paid a web designer or agency to build a website, you may feel confident that you indeed “own” your website. However, when it comes time to make changes or switch between website hosts, such as GoDaddy or Host Gator, you may realize how much – or how little – control you actually have over your company’s website. Additionally, if you are aiming for good SEO, it is essential that you “own” your website’s content. [Read more…]

Make It Better Monday: Your Business Email

April 18, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2015-10-12So, why does their email end in something other than their domain name?

A domain name is the part of your web address that comes between the “www” and the dot com. It is what people use to reach your website. If you are a business owner, you have likely realized that customers now expect you to have a website or at least a presence on the web, such as a Facebook page for your business. They also expect your email address that uses your own domain. [Read more…]

Make It Better Monday: Your Website

March 28, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2015-10-12So, who am I dealing with here?

You have listed where you are located and how you can be reached, but don’t stop there. Visitors are coming to your website for more information.  While your company may be too large to list the name of every employee or department, it is a good idea to provide the names of key contacts as well as your organization’s executives.

In an effort to attract high-quality talent, you may have invested in an employer branding campaign, but have you remembered to mention the name of the person on the receiving end of your application process? Even something as simple as including the name of your human resources manager adds a touch of personality that could win over a potential job candidate. [Read more…]

Make It Better Monday: Your Printed Materials

February 8, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2016-02-08So, they know I can’t click to zoom in on this photo, right?

While your layout may look good on a computer screen, it is essential to consider the size of images in your printed documents. An image the size of a postage stamp is not only hard to decipher, but it also occupies white space that could have been used to elegantly shape the layout of your text.

When it comes to selecting photos for a layout, quality is more important than quantity. It is easy to be tied to including every image that suits the text, but doing so will water down the effect of each photograph. [Read more…]

Make It Better Monday: Your Public Relations

February 1, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2016-02-01So, who do I call for an interview?

Being ready for a press inquiry is essential to getting press coverage and establishing positive public relations. Journalists have tight deadlines, so it is extremely important to have a dedicated contact who can respond immediately to inquiries from the press.

Contact information for your media liaison should be listed on your website as well as on all of your organization’s press releases. Be sure to include a phone number as well as email address. [Read more…]

Make It Better Monday: Your Internal Communication

January 18, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2015-11-09So, are they just going to make a public announcement?

It is essential for employers to create a culture of trust with their employees. Before addressing the general public, organizations should first reach out to their own employees to build a communication culture of trust in the midst of crisis or change.

If necessity dictates, employees may be addressed concurrently to the general public. Tailoring communication specifically to your employees will not only foster trust but also promote team spirit and encourage positive involvement in times of change or crisis.

Make It Better Monday: Your Website

January 4, 2016 by Engine Communication

MakeItBetterMonday_2015-10-12So, how old is this info?

You may have just re-launched your website with all new content yesterday, but how do we know that what we are looking at is brand new?

If you have a copyright date on your website that is updated manually, you may find yourself having to update the copyright date on each and every page of your site.

Websites with a content management system (CMS) may automatically update the date on the copyright at the footer of the page. However, since updating the copyright on your website can be done automatically, visitors still have no indication that the content they are viewing is brand new.

What are ways that you can show that your content is up to date?

  • Regularly update your blog with dated entries.
  • Include the date on any news items.
  • Add dated press releases and clippings.

So, what are ways that your web visitors can find out when your content was last updated? How often do you update your website or blog?

Are you being loyal to your audience? If you are consistent in your delivery of compelling social media content, you are giving your audience a reason to check back again for new content.

Make It Better Monday: Your Crisis Communication

November 23, 2015 by Engine Communication

So, do they have a plan?

An ounce of prevention is indeed worth a pound of cure when it comes to communication crises. A proactive communication strategy maximizes ROI. Creating a crisis communication plan will call attention to potential risks before they become crises.

Having a team in place to deal with a communication crisis will ensure that daily operations continue as smoothly as possible. Staff should also be informed on how to respond in a crisis situation. Planning your message and choosing a spokesperson beforehand enables you to respond to the crisis as soon as possible. Additionally, having established contacts to obtain necessary information is essential.
